Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
“To heal from trauma, we must turn inward, acknowledge the pain, and give ourselves the compassion and care we so desperately need.”
— Deboarh Dana, LCSW
Some moments in life can leave a lasting imprint on our minds and hearts. While some are filled with joy and love, others bring pain, paralyzing fear, and grief.
Like physical wounds, these emotional marks can be healed and released, integrated into our beings as experiences that no longer have a strong hold on us.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences. This integrative treatment method addresses the root causes of trauma by incorporating various elements to promote overall well-being.
EMDR is a holistic approach that goes beyond focusing solely on the traumatic event itself. The theoretical framework acknowledges that trauma impacts an individual's thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and beliefs about themselves and their world. By addressing these interconnected aspects, EMDR facilitates healing on multiple levels, helping you to restore balance and reclaim your life.
At Insightful Roots Therapy, we utilize EMDR to help you heal from trauma, ensuring that the emotional wounds of your past no longer define your present.
EMDR

During an EMDR session, a trained therapist guides the client through a series of specific steps. These steps include: developing coping strategies, identifying the traumatic memories, and incorporating adaptive beliefs to replace the harmful ones associated with the trauma. Throughout the process the therapist will check-in often with the client about changes in their beliefs, emotions, and body sensations to ensure the memories are being processed.
EMDR utilizes bilateral stimulation, which can include eye movements, taps, or sounds, to activate the logical part of the brain as well as the part of the brain that holds onto trauma. This bilateral stimulation helps individuals access and process traumatic memories more effectively, allowing them to reorganize their thoughts and emotions surrounding the traumatic event.
EMDR is a gradual process. Each step is taken at your own pace, ensuring that you feel safe and comfortable throughout. The goal is to help you heal from the past and cultivate a life where you feel more empowered and in control.

Through research, EMDR has shown to treat individuals who have experienced traumatic events, such as: accidents, abuse, natural disasters, combat, or any other distressing life events.
EMDR can help process and resolve the underlying causes of many conditions, leading to improved well-being and a greater sense of emotional balance. Other issues that could benefit from EMDR:
Anxiety Disorders
Attachment Wounds
Phobias
Panic Attacks
Unprocessed Grief
Addiction
Chronic Pain
Low Self-Esteem
